FOLLOWING THE PATIENT’S JOURNEY

A new interdisciplinary educational programme in development

NEI Conferences is committed to interdisciplinary education that goes beyond traditional, speciality-specific CME. From Call to Care is a new educational programme examining how patients move through the healthcare system and how each clinician’s perspective influences the care that follows.

First on Scene: The Paramedic Perspective

The programme will begin with First on Scene: The Paramedic Perspective, a course series featuring two newly trained paramedics entering the profession in 2026.

The lectures will examine what paramedics are taught today, what they encounter when they arrive at the scene, how they assess patients in complex circumstances, the decisions they make and what can change before a patient ever reaches the hospital.

Experienced paramedics may no longer notice the parts of the system that surprise someone entering the profession for the first time. These two paramedics will compare what they learned during their training with what they encounter in practice, providing an immediate and honest perspective on the transition from education to the field.

Each lecture will explore a different stage of prehospital care: the emergency call, the scene, the initial assessment, decisions made during transport, changes in the patient’s condition and the transfer of care at the emergency department.

The prehospital portion of the patient journey must be more visible. Paramedics often see the patient first, speak with families and witnesses, observe the original presentation and recognise changes that may influence every decision that follows.

Following the paramedic perspective, the programme is intended to examine the patient’s journey through the lenses of emergency physicians and nurses, trauma and critical care teams, diagnostic imaging specialists, consulting physicians, pharmacists, family physicians and rehabilitation professionals.

Each discipline enters the patient’s story at a different moment. By placing these perspectives beside one another, the courses will explore how information, decisions and communication move with the patient from the first call through emergency care and beyond.

Lectures will be added twice monthly to the NEI course library as the programme develops.
